When choosing a SuperWalk site, consider accessibility, safety, logistics, and cost to ensure an inclusive and practical event.
- Route Options: You can have multiple routes or a single looped path, allowing participants to walk multiple times if able. If using a longer route, include exit points for those who may not complete the full course.
- Accessibility & Safety: Choose a route that is wide enough for multiple people and suitable for walkers, wheelchairs, and mobility devices. Paths should be paved or reasonably level, free of significant tree roots, and not heavily obstructed by trees. The area should be safe for course marshals and signage, and routes should be clearly marked to prevent participants from getting lost. Consider weather conditions—September rain or early snow may make some surfaces slippery, so opt for firm ground or pavement to reduce tripping hazards.
- Start & Finish: Clearly define the start and finish lines to ensure a smooth and safe experience for all walkers.
- Property Considerations: Walks should take place on public property. Private or corporate-owned properties are generally not suitable for official events.
- Conflicting Events: Check if other major events are scheduled at the location to prevent confusion and ensure clear distinction between activities.
- Parking & Transit: The location should have suitable parking, including accessible spaces, and, where possible, be accessible by public transit. Free parking is ideal.
- Washrooms: Ensure the site has accessible washrooms appropriate for the number of participants. A single washroom may not be sufficient for larger walks, so consider the size of the event when assessing restroom availability.
- Setup Space: Confirm whether tables, chairs, and tents can be safely set up on-site and discuss logistics with Parkinson Society British Columbia staff.
- Cost Considerations: Most municipalities charge permit fees, but the cost should be reasonable based on the expected number of participants. For smaller walks, high permit fees may not be justifiable.
